...Look to the nations...

“‎Look to the nations, watch and be utterly amazed for I am going to do something in your days that you would not believe even if you were told.” (Habakkuk 1:5)

We praise God for bringing us thus far towards the end of year 2011. While making evaluation, reviews and setting projections for the coming year 2012, it will be wise and timely that eternal mindset is topmost as we review our priorities by giving credence to the salvation of the nations. Where has been your focus? Where has been the church’s focus? Where our focus, priorities, ambitions looks certainly informs even a stranger of one’s destination in this life. Look to the nations!

God addressed both the prophet and the people. Habakkuk had complained about being made to look at injustice. God instructed them to get their eyes off the immediate havoc and look out on the international horizons. They needed to develop a world view that included "the nations." As they did so, they would be utterly amazed. Since they will not be brought to repentance by the long-suffering of God, he will take another course with them. No resentments are so keen, so deep, as those of abused patience.

Being only human, Habakkuk had suffered from tunnel vision as he considered Judah's situation. God invited him to "look at the nations" (1:5) and view the world through God's eyes. From that viewpoint, all nations both great and small are merely tools in God's hands. God answered His servant and assured him that He was at work among the nations even though Habakkuk couldn't see it. God gave Habakkuk a revelation, not an explanation, for what we always need in times of doubt is a new view of God. The Lord doesn't owe us any explanations, but He does graciously reveal Himself and His work to those who seek Him.

The call to look to the nations is a timely call to all and sundry. The nations are waiting while indulging and being busy in their evil ways. The increasing measure of evil globally attests to the activities of the dark places of the earth which is the habitation of cruelty. Looking to the nations will revive our lost vision, passion, compassion, empathy and commitment to respond to their need of salvation. It is high time we look to the plight of the nations and minister the total gospel to them from north to south, east to west, and everywhere.

It seems like our eyes has not been on the nations for this while, hence the rise in evil and wickedness. It is sad to accept this fact. Looking at the nations steers our hearts to cry out to our Lord God Almighty to arise that His enemies be scattered even as chaff before the wind.

What you look at defines and dominates your vision in life. To be emburdened and envisioned with God’s heart and mandate for the nations we will have to look to the nations because that is where His eyes looks at.
